Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.

Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer magnitude of destruction and just resigns itself to fate, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.

But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you experienced morphs into a sigh.

Ultimately, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?

Awful Day Ever

It all started with my case of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for school.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
